Ar Log – Suite of Welsh Folk Songs / Cyfres o Ganeuon Gwerin Cymreig 30 MayMay 2022 00:00 - 00:00 UTCSt Davids, Wales

Arts Event

This event will be a wonderful opportunity to hear the well-known Welsh folk band Ar Log perform a new suite of songs live as part of St Davids Cathedral festival.

Since they were formed in 1976, Ar Log’s sets have followed the long folk tradition in Wales of performing songs in the Welsh language as well as reviving a more ancient tradition of performing instrumental pieces. The instrumentals, which feature the Welsh triple harp, range from jigs, reels and hornpipes to more modern compositions. The songs, in the tradition of the Celtic peoples, use music and poetry to keep alive the myths and legends of their rich history. This story telling continues to this day.

The performance includes an example of this with the premiere of a suite of six new Welsh folk songs composed by the renowned classical composer Paul Mealor, with words by Eisteddfod winning poet Grahame Davies.

The inspiration for the songs come from the Ancient Connections programme, and draw on the lives of St David, St Aidan, and St Patrick, who was born in Wales and it is believed set sail for Ireland from Whitesands Bay.

Grahame Davies’s librettos beautifully capture the spirit of the mission of those early Celtic saints wistfully incorporating in one piece St. David’s last words to his followers, “ … do the little things that you have seen and heard me do”, which have a relevance and force for us today.

Also included is a mournful song inspired by the suffering of the Welsh princess Branwen as a consequence of the tense, mistrustful and at times aggressive relationships between the peoples of Wales and Ireland in The Bronze Age. The suite also contains an elegy for two poets, one Welsh and one Irish who died in Flanders on the same day during World War 1.

Bydd y digwyddiad hwn yn gyfle gwych i glywed y band gwerin o Gymru, Ar Log, yn perfformio cyfres o ganeuon newydd yn fyw fel rhan o ŵyl Eglwys Gadeiriol Dewi Sant.

Ers i’r band  gael ei sefydlu ym 1976, mae ei setiau wedi dilyn yr hen draddodiad gwerin  o berfformio caneuon yn y Gymraeg yn ogystal ag adfywio traddodiad mwy hynafol o berfformio darnau offerynnol. Mae’r darnau offerynnol, sy’n cynnwys y delyn deires, yn amrywio o jigiau, riliau a chornbibau i gyfansoddiadau mwy cyfoes. Mae’r caneuon, yn nhraddodiad y Celtiaid, yn defnyddio cerddoriaeth a barddoniaeth i gadw mythau a chwedlau eu hanes cyfoethog yn fyw. Mae’r dull hwn o adrodd straeon yn parhau hyd heddiw.

Mae’r perfformiad yn cynnwys enghraifft o hyn gan arddangos chwe chân werin Gymraeg newydd am y tro cyntaf a gyfansoddwyd gan y cyfansoddwr clasurol adnabyddus, Paul Mealor, a’r geiriau gan y bardd ac enillydd yr Eisteddfod, Grahame Davies.

Daw’r ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer y caneuon o’r rhaglen Cysylltiadau Hynafol gan dynnu ar fywydau Dewi Sant, Sant Aidan a Sant Padrig a anwyd yng Nghymru ac a hwyliodd i Iwerddon o Borth Mawr yn ôl y sôn.

Mae geiriau Grahame Davies yn dal ysbryd cenhadaeth y seintiau Celtaidd cynnar hynny gan gynnwys geiriau olaf Dewi Sant i’w ddilynwyr yn un o’r darnau, “… gwnewch y pethau bychain”, sy’n berthnasol ac yn bwysig iawn i ni heddiw.

Mae’r caneuon newydd hefyd yn cynnwys cân alarus a ysbrydolwyd gan  y dywysoges o Gymru, Branwen, a ddioddefodd oherwydd y berthynas ddirdynnol, amheus ac ymosodol ar adegau rhwng pobl Cymru a phobl Iwerddon yn yr Oes Efydd. Mae’r caneuon newydd hefyd yn cynnwys marwnad i ddau fardd, un o Gymru ac un o Iwerddon a fu farw yn Fflandrys ar yr un diwrnod yn ystod y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf.
