All are invited to a weekend of free events in Ferns show casing community and arts projects that have been supported by the Ancient Connections on April 30th and May 1st Expect music, talks, tours and a spectacular Pilgrims send off to celebrate the launch of Creative Camino!

The crescendo of the weekend is Turlough O Carolan in Music & Song performed by The Allabair Trio at St. Edan’s Cathedral, Ferns Sunday May 1st 2022 at 7.30pm, presented by Ferns Heritage Project. This is a world premiere concert of a traditional Celtic music piece, composed and performed by Melanie O’Reilly, singing alongside local choirs. Entry to the concert is FREE, but pre-booking is required through Eventbrite. Seating is limited, so BOOK HERE EARLY.

Following the concert at 9pm, the Wexford based events company Lanterns and Ferns community will give a spectacular send off to Creative Camino pilgrims who will walk from Ferns to St Davids; trialling the new 145km trans-national pilgrimage route from Ferns, Co. Wexford to St Davids, Pembrokeshire which is being developed by the British Pilgrimage Trust. The send off will include lanterns made by local school children and a rowdy performance from the Bloc Garman Drummers.  Creative Camino Launch Event is FREE and requires no booking.

Other events over the weekend are Ui Cinnsealaigh History of Ferns guided tours and talks on April 30th and May 1st which will take in sites such as Father Murphy Centre, Boolavogue, Jameson’s historic residence at Rockspring, Ferns. A bus will be provided to the sites.

All welcome to a fascinating talk by  Brewen Favrau at St. Mogue’s Cottage, Ferns, April 30th 2022 at 7.00pm entitled Connection Over the Sea: A look at the connection points of cultural history of Wales and Brittany, with a stop in Ireland.

On 1st May at 6pm in Scoil Naomh Maedhog, Ferns, a FREE talk by internationally renowned Welsh artist Bedwyr Williams about his forthcoming public art commission ‘Do the Little Things’ – a series of oversized and fully functioning bee skeps made from cedar wood to be located near St Edan’s Cathedral, Ferns, and St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire. All welcome!

Saturday April 30th 2022

9.30am                Mass in St. Aidan’s Church, Ferns (History of Ferns Group).

10am to 5pm     “History of St. Aidan Project” exhibition at Scoil Naomh Maodhog NS (History of Ferns Group)

10.00am              Guided tour by History of Ferns Group of Clone Church, Father Murphy Centre, Boolavogue, Jameson’s historic residence at Rockspring, Ferns.  Collection by bus at St. Aidan’s Church carpark, Ferns 10am.

2.30 to 3.30pm  Talk on “St. Aidan” by Christopher Power at Scoil Naomh Maodhog NS (History of Ferns Group)

3.45pm                Mass Path Walk from Tombrack to Ferns Church to arrive for 6.15pm Mass (History of Ferns Group). Collection by bus at St. Aidan’s Church carpark, Ferns at 3.45pm to the start of Mass Path Walk.

7pm                      ‘Connection Over the Sea: a look at the connection points of cultural history of Wales and Brittany, with a stop in Ireland’, presented by Brewen Favrau at St. Mogue’s Cottage (History of Ferns Group)

2pm – 4pm.       Ui Cinnsealaigh History of Ferns House of Story Session, Oulart (History of Ferns Group). Collection by bus at St. Aidan’s Church carpark, Ferns 2pm.

4.30pm                Visit to Ballymore Historic Features, Camolin (History of Ferns Group). Please note, included on bus tour. Bus returns to Ferns at 6pm.

6pm                      Artist’s Talk by Welsh internationally acclaimed artist Bedwyr Williams: ‘Do the Little Things’ and presentation of location of new Public Art in Ferns, venue: Scoil Naomh Maodhog National School (Contemporary Art Society & Ancient Connections Project Team)

7.30pm                The Creative Camino Concert at St. Edan’s Cathedral (Ferns Heritage Project).

9pm                      The Creative Camino Launch Event at St. Edan’s Cathedral (Lantern Presents)
