Do the Little Things is a new public artwork designed for two locations: St Davids Cathedral, Pembrokeshire, and Ferns, Wexford.

The three giant bee hives made from cedar wood have been created by Bedwyr Williams, whose project has been realised with the support of Contemporary Art Society Consultancy.

These ‘living sculptures’ will house live bee colonies and Do the Little Things connects the two communities of St Davids and Ferns through the practice of beekeeping, reflecting the medieval story of St David and his friendship with St Aidan, who brought bees back to Ireland from Wales.

The bee colonies are being cared for by local beekeepers and community groups, who will be harvesting and selling honey in labelled jars designed by the artist and local school children.

Bedwyr says: “I’m interested in objects that invite communities to become active participants to make the artwork whole. St David’s last words were “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” or “Do the little things.” This ethos has guided the development of my proposal, which is founded on the story of St David and St Aidan and steeped in the magic and history of these two intertwined locations.”

Sited in the grounds of St David’s Cathedral, the first edition of the work opens to the public on Friday 18 November from 3.00 pm. The launch will include a Q&A with the artist and local beekeeper Gayle Twitchen, storytelling, and a performance of  the ‘Bee Song’ by children from Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi led by composer Sam Howley. The event is free and all are welcome.

Bees have linked St Davids and Ferns since the sixth century, when St David gifted a hive of bees to St Aidan to keep, after the monastery bees twice followed their favourite monk home to Ireland and had to be brought back” said the Very Revd Dr Sarah Rowland Jones, Dean of the Cathedral. “We’re delighted to welcome this striking symbol of the ties between us”.

Gwnewch y Pethau Bychain – lansiad gwaith celf cyhoeddus newydd gan Bedwyr Williams yn Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi – croeso i bawb!

Mae Gwnewch y Pethau Bychain yn waith celf cyhoeddus newydd a ddyluniwyd ar gyfer dau leoliad: Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi, Sir Benfro, a Fearna, Llwch Garmon.

Mae’r tri chwch gwenyn anferth sydd wedi’u gwneud o bren cedrwydd wedi’u comisiynu gan Cysylltiadau Hynafol, prosiect a ariennir gan yr UE dan arweiniad Cyngor Sir Penfro. Mae prosiect Bedwyr Williams wedi ei wireddu gyda chefnogaeth Ymgynghoriaeth y Gymdeithas Celf Gyfoes.

Bydd y 'cerfluniau byw' hyn yn gartref i gytrefi gwenyn byw ac mae 'Gwnewch y Pethau Bychain' yn cysylltu dwy gymuned Tyddewi a Fearna drwy’r arfer o gadw gwenyn, gan adlewyrchu stori ganoloesol Dewi Sant a’i gyfeillgarwch ag Aeddan Sant, a ddaeth â gwenyn yn ôl i Iwerddon o Gymru.

Mae gwenynwyr lleol a grwpiau cymunedol yn gofalu am y cytrefi gwenyn, a fydd yn cynaeafu a gwerthu mêl mewn jariau wedi’u labelu a ddyluniwyd gan yr artist a phlant ysgol lleol.

Dywed Bedwyr: “Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn gwrthrychau sy'n gwahodd cymunedau i ddod yn gyfranogwyr gweithredol i wneud y gwaith celf yn gyfan. Geiriau olaf Dewi Sant oedd “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” neu “Do the little things.” Mae’r ethos hwn wedi llywio datblygiad fy nghynnig, sy’n seiliedig ar stori Dewi Sant ac Aeddan Sant ac sydd wedi’i drwytho yn hud a hanes y ddau leoliad cydgysylltiedig hyn.”

Wedi'i leoli ar dir Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi, mae rhifyn cyntaf y gwaith yn agor i'r cyhoedd Dydd Gwener 16 Tachwedd o 3.00 pm. Bydd y lansiad yn dod â grwpiau cymunedol i'r safle ar gyfer sesiwn holi ac ateb gyda'r artist a’r gwenynwr lleol Gayle Twitchen, adrodd straeon, a pherfformiad o 'The Bee Song' gan blant o Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi dan arweiniad y cyfansoddwr Sam Howley. Mae'r digwyddiad am ddim ac mae croeso i bawb.

"Mae gwenyn wedi cysylltu Tyddewi a Fearna ers y chweched ganrif, pan roddodd Dewi Sant gwch gwenyn i Aeddan Sant i’w gadw, ar ôl i wenyn y fynachlog ddilyn eu hoff fynach i Iwerddon ddwywaith a bu’n rhaid dod â nhw’n ôl’ meddai’r" Tra Barchedig Dr Sarah Rowland Jones, Deon yr Eglwys Gadeiriol. "Rydym yn falch iawn o groesawu'r symbol trawiadol hwn o'r cysylltiadau rhyngom".
